This week in the news: INPI is caramelized

The Brazilian Intellectual Property Law (INPI) has received an application of a Geographical Indication (GI) in the form of indicação de procedência (Indication of Source) for 'cajuína Piauí'. The application was introduced by the Cooperative for the Producers of Cajuína from the State of Piaui.


Cajuína is a non-alcoholic beverage obtained from cashew, very popular in the States of Piauí, Ceará and Rio Grande do Norte. It is said to be a typical product of the State of Piauí and defined as a “clarified cashew juice”. The juice is obtained from the edible part of the stalk of the cashew, that while it goes through a technological process it is yet prepared in an artisanal way. It is a non-diluted as well as non-fermented drink which is free from additives. It differs from simple cashew juices and concentrated ones, through a heat treatment. The result is a amber/yellowish glossy fruity-flavoured cashew resulting from the caramelization of the natural sugars.

The Cajuína was adopted by the city of Teresina as a cultural symbol and it is considerated as a cultural Patrimony in the State of Piauí According to the news published by INPI, the popular acceptance of the product became more famous with the success of a song by Caetano Veloso titled "cajuína”. Now to become a GI, it will give the product better visibility and thus, marketability.
